THE COMUNEROS OF CASTLE: THE FORGING OF A REVOLUTION 1475-1521

Madison, WI: The University of Wisconsin Press, 1981. Hardcover. 305 pp; overturns view that Ferdinand and Isabella have been traditionally been treated as the precedent-setting monarchs who, in uniting Aragon and Castile, created the first national, dynamic state of the post-feudal era. The author contends that from his research there becomes apparent a contrary pattern; in that they seem to have consolidated their own royal power and national control at the expense of provincial liberties and economic dislocation. The combination of public resentment over taxation and other issues and a growing disallusionment with a government that was becoming less effective and less responsive to the needs of its earlier supporters brought about a dangerous situation.
